Leeds cleared over Rio transfer

LEEDS UNITED have been cleared of any financial impropriety over Rio Ferdinand's £18 million switch to Elland Road from West Ham.

Controversial agent Rune Hauge was a key figure in the transfer of the England international but audit accountants Deloitte & Touche and lawyers Addleshaw Booth & Co have explained that all aspects of the transfer had been properly authorised.

A statement to the stock exchange read: "In light of recent media coverage regarding player transfers and payments to agents, the Audit Committee of Leeds United asked its auditors (Deloitte & Touche) and the law firm Addleshaw Booth & Co to carry out a review of the transfer of Rio Ferdinand from West Ham United to Leeds United.

"The auditors' report has now been presented to the Audit Committee. The report confirms that the expenditure and payments for the transfer, including agents` fees, were properly authorised in accordance with Leeds United policy.

"The Audit Committee can also confirm that there is no evidence of any financial impropriety or lack of financial controls.

"The Audit Committee took the opportunity at the same time to seek advice regarding possible ways in which existing procedures could be improved for the future.

"Any recommendations made will be fully implemented."
