Barthez hurt by 'clown' jibes
The colourful Frenchman was a figure of fun for critics and opposing supporters last term after a string of high-profile blunders, most notably against Deportivo La Coruna and Arsenal.
This season, Barthez has been approaching the peak of his powers and has looked a much more reliable proposition between the Old Trafford sticks.
But the former Monaco ace admits he was thankful for the support of United when the criticism threatened to engulf him over 12 months ago.
"The expression 'clown' has been used about me and I know people talk about my eccentricities," said Barthez.
"After that Arsenal game, people came to my house trying to get me to wear things to look like a clown so they could take pictures. It was not very nice.
"At that time I needed the support of people around me at the club. Manager Alex Ferguson, our goalkeeping coach Tony Coton and the other players helped me through.
"No matter how strong you are, you need that kind of support."
Last season's dip in form prompted suggestions Barthez would be offloaded and the pre-season capture of Spanish keeper Ricardo heightened speculation the Gallic star would leave Old Trafford.
Barthez, though, is adamant he will see out his contract with The Red Devils, which expires in 2007.
He added: "I have always said I intend to stay until the end of that contract. I am very happy with everything at my disposal to enjoy life.
"Football is very important to me. It is always on my mind. And here, I have great players and great fans who really know their football."
