Ezomo joins The U's

CAMBRIDGE UNITED have taken defender Ezomo 'Izzy' Iriekpen on a month's loan from Premiership strugglers West Ham United.

The 20-year-old impressed U's boss John Taylor with his displays in training and the club's reserves while on trial this week.

Iriekpen is likely to go straight into the Cambridge side that host Torquay United at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday, with Taylor giving consideration to taking the centre half permanently from The Hammers for next term.

The youngster has already had a previous spell on loan with fellow Division Three side Leyton Orient this season and had been training with Northampton Town, before ending his brief time at the Sixfields Stadium.

"He was our first choice actually," Taylor told the club's official website.

"About a month ago, we watched him when he was training with Northampton.

"He had a slight hamstring strain, went back to West Ham and - perhaps fortunately for us but unfortunately for the man - the Northampton manager [Terry Fenwick] got the sack so he came into us this week.

"His contract will be up in the summer at West Ham and it won't be renewed.

"We like him, he's got great attributes - he's a big, strong lad."
