Ortega banned by Fifa

JULIO GRONDONA, president of the Argentine Football Association, has confirmed Ariel Ortega will not be able to play for the national team until he resolves his dispute with Fenerbahce.

Ortega wants to quit the Turkish club and return to River Plate but a financial wrangle is preventing the deal being completed.

In the interim, Fener want Ortega to represent them but the diminutive playmaker is adamant he will not be going back to Istanbul.

Fifa have now banned Ortega from playing football until the matter is settled and Grondona admits the former Parma ace is in a quandary.

"It's a particular problem," opined Grondona. "There was money being paid to the player for a contract that he has signed and it's very difficult to reach a solution if the club doesn't agree. Ortega has been disqualified by Fifa.

"If a player doesn't have the authorisation of the club that bought him, he can't play in any team in the world.

"The contracts that are signed must be honoured until the end, or have to be resolved. I am very sorry for what is happening with Ortega because he is a very good kid to whom I am very thankful for all that he has done for Argentina."

Grondona also absolved the AFA of any responsibility for Ortega's recent decision to return to Argentina after the national team's friendly in Holland.

The AFA supremo added: "He did that on his own. He bought himself an airline ticket and returned to Argentina.

"He didn't travel with the rest of the players of the national team and we can't do anything about that."
