Carpenter faces legal action

FORMER Reading player Chris Casper has started legal proceedings against Brighton midfielder Richard Carpenter over the horror tackle that ended his career.

The incident occurred on Boxing Day 1999 in which 26-year-old Casper suffered a broken leg during a clash against Carpenter's former club Cardiff City.

The combative star has always protested his innocence over the incident and says he never set out with the intent to hurt the former Under-21 international.

Carpenter told the The Seagulls' official website: "I know hand on my heart I didn't go in to hurt him but to win the ball.

"Unfortunately it happened and if I could turn the clock back I would.

"I apologised at the time and went to see him at the hospital, but I was turned away.

"It upset me and really worried me."

The ex-Royals star battled in vain for two years in an attempt to regain full fitness but was forced to quit the game last year and is taking legal action on the grounds that Carpenter committed a reckless challenge.
