Iron eye Rocky

SCUNTHORPE UNITED have handed a trial to Farnborough Town star Rocky Baptiste.

The 30-year-old has spent most of his career in the non-professional ranks of the game, albeit a short spell with Luton Town two seasons ago.

He moved to Kenilworth Road from Wealdstone, but he failed to force his way into the first team despite his obvious skills which has since seen him dubbed the 'Kanu'of non-league football.

Baptiste moved on to Farnborough in June 2001 and is currently topping the scoring charts, including netting Boro's only goal in their 5-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The Town ace will play for The Iron in their reserve team clash against Darlington on Wednesday.

Joining Baptiste will be another two trialists in Keith Gilroy and Graham Ward.

Both midfielders, Gilroy comes in from Middlesbrough and Ward is currently with Wolves.

All will be looking to impress and earn a permanent deal at Glanford Park.

Manager Brian Laws admits he is looking to strengthen all aspects of his squad before the transfer deadline later this month.

"I know I can't improve all three [defence, midfield and attack] because we haven't got the finances to do that, but if there is a possibility of bringing someone in before the deadline, then I will try," said Laws (pictured).

"I do feel we need to strengthen to give our promotion hopes a real boost, but it is important to bring in the right player.

"I am trying to line-up one or two areas and if it comes through, then brilliant."
