Freddie eyes Swedish exit

ARSENAL midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg says that he is considering retiring from international football before the next World Cup.

The Swedish star is thinking ahead to later on in his career and says he would hang up his international boots to prolong his club career.

"We will see. I will not continue until I can't play any more," Ljungberg told Expressen.

"Unfortunately, when we play so much in the Champions League and everything, you can see that many elder players stop a bit earlier with the national team and avoid the strain and thereby cope better with avoiding injuries."

The likes of Alan Shearer and Dennis Bergkamp have called time on their international days in order to put in superb displays for their clubs, and it is these examples that Ljungberg is looking to follow.

"Such players who quit the national team certainly feel that it is a big honour to play there, I feel it is the best that exists.

"But I understand the ones who are a bit older who choose to be able to play on at a high level for their club sides some additional years, without the national team."

The 25-year-old has just returned from a troublesome hip problem and says that as soon as his body tells him he is struggling he will end his time with Sweden.

"At the moment, I don't have that problem. But when you feel that the body can't stand it, you have to take that decision."
