Kuranyi nets German call-up

GERMANY coach Rudi Voller has handed a maiden call-up to VfB Stuttgart striker Kevin Kuranyi for the forthcoming Euro 2004 qualifier against Lithuania.

Kuranyi has poached 13 goals in Die Bundesliga this term as Stuttgart chase a spot in the Champions League.

The highly-rated 21-year-old was delighted to be included in the squad but concedes it will raise the expectation level now he has the chance to perform on the international stage.

"I am naturally very pleased about it," said Kuranyi. "Now I will be watched even more and therefore I must work even harder.

"I didn't expect to be included and honestly speaking I have to say I didn't know the game was coming up so soon."

Voller had no qualms selecting the untested young marksman as he feels Kuranyi is in much sharper form than his striking rivals.

"Kevin has shown great achievement in recent weeks and months," Voller said.

"Oliver Neuville, Carsten Jancker and also Gerald Asamoah are somewhat off form at the present time. But that is just a snapshot of the present moment and could change for the next international match. The door to the national team is not closed to them."

Kuranyi is the only fresh face for the qualifying tie in Nurnberg, although Voller will be minus the services of the influential Michael Ballack, with the Bayern Munich midfielder suffering with an ankle injury.
