Roberto Carlos banned

ROBERTO CARLOS'S international career with Brazil has been put on hold after he was provisionally suspended by Fifa.

The Real Madrid ace was sent off playing for his country after appearing to shoulder-charge referee Alon Yefet in the 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

The incident, which occurred towards the end of the contest, when the 29-year-old decided to physically show his displeasure at the referee, was reviewed by a Fifa comittee.

After careful consideration, football's governing body decided the pacey wing back should receive an international ban, though the suspension does not include club matches.

The player himself told Radio Jovem Pam that he was okay with the suspension handed to him.

"I am calm with the suspension and with what Fifa has decided  - everything is being handled by the lawyers of Brazil," said the wing back.

"I can't add too much to all this, this is a justice problem that is already being studied from Brazil and the only thing we can do is to wait and see what will be Fifa's final decision."

That means the experienced Brazilian is still available for Real, and is likely to feature in Vicente Del Bosque's starting line-up against Manchester United on Tuesday.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had suggested that the fact that their defender would not be banned from club games was a reflection of Real's power within the game.
