Reyna eyes Confederations Cup

CLAUDIO REYNA has not given up hope of featuring for the United States in the summer's Confederations Cup.

The Sunderland midfielder has not played since the end of October after damaging his cruciate knee ligaments.

He has ruled himself out of figuring for The Black Cats prior to the end of the campaign and is focused on returning for his club in pre-season.

But Reyna is eyeing possible participation in his nation's tilt at the Confederations Cup in France in mid-June.

Though the 29-year-old has yet to make a firm decision, he believes the tournament could be the ideal way to boost his fitness.

"Everything is going to plan as far as the injury is concerned but I won't play again this season," said Reyna.

"It's a case of making sure I'm right for pre-season. That's the sole target and it could mean playing for the US in the summer.

"I've spoken to the manager (Mick McCarthy) about it and he's got no problems. I'll just see how it goes. For me, the summer is about regaining my fitness and making sure I'm ready when we return to pre-season training.

"The Confederations Cup in France could be a good way for me to boost my fitness. I don't know yet what I'll do."
