Cantona slams Madrid
The Spanish giants have been credited with wanting to add the England captain to their ranks but Cantona, the talisman for United's revival in the 1990s, says Madrid acted in a spiteful way designed to unnerve the United dressing room.
"When I knew him, Beckham already had a lot of qualities, but he knew how to develop them, because he is a strong character and he is clever," Cantona told L'Equipe.
"About the transfer rumours, I must say in England, there is respect between clubs.
"It is not right that the rest of Europe act in this way.
"Real set-out to destabilise the United team before the Champions League quarter final.
"It is a nasty thing to do. I'm not sure if the Spanish really want him.
"But it is certain that Beckham has everything needed to succeed there."
Cantona also cast his predictions over the title clash to take place between The Red Devils and Arsenal on Wednesday: "I can see a draw. But I have no doubt for the end of the season: Manchester will win."
