Gunners appeal Campbell red card

ARSENAL have confirmed they will lodge an appeal to the Football Association over Sol Campbell's sending-off against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The England international was given a straight red card by referee Mark Halsey for appearing to elbow United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seven minutes from the end of the 2-2 draw at Highbury.

The former Tottenham star has protested his innocence over the incident and had asked Hasley to look at the incident again on video.

Campbell faces a four-match ban, including the FA Cup final against Southampton should the red card stand.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger feels Campbell was unfairly treated and confirmed the appeal.

"We will appeal," Wenger told the club's official website. "I have seen it again on the video and it was obviously accidental.

"Sol didn't mean to hurt [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer and his reaction did not help. A four-game ban would be very unjust."

Meanwhile, the FA have reacted in the wake of the incident by revealing they are to change the rules regarding the availability of suspended players for international duty.

Under current rules any player that is banned domestically during the international calendar cannot be selected for England, but the FA's international committee have decided to overturn the rule.

"We no longer feel it's fair that domestic suspensions should be carried over to the national team when this is not the case in other countries," said an FA spokesman.

"Obviously we want to provide the England coach with every opportunity to field his strongest side."
