Gudni forced to put club before country

BOLTON defender Gudni Bergsson has sparked a club versus country row by revealing Sam Allardyce forced him to pull out of the Iceland squad for this week's friendly with Finland.

Allardyce is keen to have his captain available for his side's crucial last two games of the season and does not want to risk him in a meaningless friendly.

Bergsson has been playing through the pain barrier for Bolton in recent months and Allardyce is keen to have him fit for the run-in.

The former Tottenham ace admitted Allardyce had forced him against the will of Iceland coach Atli Edvaldsson to withdraw from the squad.

It is not the first time that Allardyce has asked his players to put club before country with Henrik Pedersen, Bernard Mendy and Jussi Jaaskalainen all missing previous internationals.

"Allardyce put a lot of pressure on me as a captain not to go and Atli (Edvaldsson) also put a pressure on me to go to Finland," revealed Bergsson.

"There is a lot at stake for Bolton to keep their place in the Premier League and Allardyce had before got Jussi Jaaskalainen not to play with Finland, Henrik Pedersen not to play with Denmark and Bernard Mendy to skip a game with the France Under-21 team.

"He said to me that it was too much of a risk if I would go to Finland even though I would not play more than the first half there.

"I finally agreed this because I am 37 years old and need an injection and swell wasting tablets before every game to be able to play."

Meanwhile, Allardyce believes two more points may be good enough to secure his side's Premiership safety.

The Trotters are just two points above West Ham in the battle to avoid the drop and Alladyce is urging his side to stay unbeaten in their last two games of the season.

Allardyce had initially thought 41 points would be good enough to keep them up, but now feels they need at least two more points to ensure their Premiership status.

"I now think 41 points might not be enough to ensure safety this season," he said. "We are getting positive results and so are West Ham, so it could be the year when a club is relegated with a record points tally.

"The players must be applauded for their efforts, particularly at this stage of the season when the pressure is burgeoning.

"From my point of view the important thing is to protect our unbeaten run."
