Shearer fractures ankle

NEWCASTLE UNITED captain Alan Shearer will be sidelined for up to two months after it was revealed he has fractured his ankle.

Shearer suffered the injury in Saturday's North East derby win at Sunderland following a tackle from Sean Thornton.

The Magpies' leading scorer was immediately ruled out of the club's final two games of the season, with the initial diagnosis being a twisted ankle.

But it has now been confirmed that Shearer has fractured his right ankle and will be sidelined for between six and eight weeks.

He had already been suffering from a fractured knuckle and cut head prior to Saturday's tussle with the Black Cats before collecting the fresh knock.

Shearer will now have to channel his energies on being fit for the start of pre-season training and hope his team-mates can secure a Champions League spot in his absence.
