Dyer: Fans deserve silverware

KIERON DYER says he and the rest of his Newcastle United team-mates owe the fans a trophy next season whether it be in Europe or on the domestic front.

The Magpies are never short on entertainment for their loyal Geordie fans but despite the club's undoubted progression under Sir Bobby Robson they still have yet to win any silverware.

The Toon Army are currently third in The Premiership, looking to secure a second consecutive season in the Champions League, but England midfielder Dyer says the players must put a trophy in their cabinet as reward for the fans' support soon - even if it is only the Worthington Cup.

"The team is capable of battling it out for the title, because it has far from fulfilled its potential," the former Ipswich Town man told The Sun.

"But it is so long since we won something that the fans have forgotten what it is like.

"If we just won the Worthington Cup it could show that we can win prizes and lay the foundations of other trophies to come."

The title challenge from St James' Park has faded badly in recent weeks and Dyer says the club need to break out of the rut of not delivering the goods.

"Newcastle is a brilliant, manic football city," added Dyer.

"Yet you get the feeling the supporters have become used to the team falling short, whether it is in the league or in the cups.

"We need something to show for our efforts and offer the supporters."
