Abbiati content at Milan

MILAN'S back-up goalkeeper Christian Abbiati is happy to stay at the club, despite attracting the interest of Premiership champions Arsenal.

Abbiati has been forced to play second fiddle to Brazilian shot-stopper Dida at San Siro this term and has been restricted to just two Serie A appearances.

His lack of action has not deterred Arsenal from putting him under the microscope and adding him to their seemingly limitless list of goalkeeping targets.

Gunners scouts recently watched Abbiati in Coppa Italia action against Perugia but the 25-year-old is confident he will still be with Milan next term.

"Next season, I'll surely stay at Milan, even if I don't play," vowed Abbiati. "But that doesn't mean I won't play."

Abbiati's infrequent club appearances have not prevented him from gaining international recognition and he was involved in Italy's friendly with Switzerland on Wednesday evening.

Though he was primarily selected due to the absence of Francesco Toldo and Gianluigi Buffon, Abbiati was delighted to still be in Azzurri coach Giovanni Trapattoni's thoughts.

He added: "It means that, despite everything, I still have a good consideration. I've been in this group for many years and, for me, it is like my home."
