Wenger unmoved on Upson sale

ARSENE WENGER refuses to believe the sale of Matthew Upson hindered Arsenal's prospects of retaining their Premiership crown.

In the closing weeks of the Gunners' failed defence of their title, Wenger was beset by problems to the centre of his defence.

Martin Keown picked up an injury but upon the veteran stopper's return, Sol Campbell began a suspension and Pascal Cygan was injured at Bolton.

That left Wenger desperately short of quality cover at the heart of his rearguard as Arsenal surrendered their crown to fierce rivals Manchester United courtesy of their 3-2 defeat to Leeds on Sunday.

Upson was sold to Birmingham City during January's transfer window after impressing during a three-month loan spell at Reading during the first half of the campaign.

He has subsequently shone for Blues and his form also earned him a call-up to the England squad.

Gunners chief Wenger does not feel Upson's departure influenced the outcome of the title race as he believes the injury epidemic could have consumed the highly-rated centre half.

"Of course, you see that the problem is that Matthew was out on loan for a long time," said Wenger. "He came back and wanted to play but couldn't because we had plenty of centre backs.

"We had an injury crisis that could have even touched Upson if he was here. What happened to us you could always complain about but we want to analyse what happened and come back next season stronger."

Ahead of Arsenal's final home game of the season against Southampton on Wednesday evening, Wenger confirmed young left back Ryan Garry would be given the chance to shine.

He added: "I will rest a few players, Gilberto Silva for instance. I would have rested him even if we had something to play for.

"Ryan Garry or Jermaine Pennant may get a chance at the start of the game. It is a good opportunity for them to show they are good players.

"The opportunity for Garry is at left back to be at least cover for (Ashley) Cole or long term to fight for his position."
