I'll take wage cut to stay - Merson

PAUL MERSON has revealed that he is prepared to take a wage cut in order to extend his stay with Premiership-bound Portsmouth.

The 35-year-old has been inspirational as Pompey captain this season, leading the Fratton Park outfit to the Division One title.

The former England man has admitted he will take a 50 percent cut in his wages in order to commit his future to the club and will talk with manager Harry Redknapp about extending his contract to the summer of 2005.

The news will come as a turnaround from the former Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa player, who had admitted earlier in the season that he was considering retiring from playing.

"I want to stay at the club and I am willing to do it for less money," said Merson.

"I have loved it here, helping the club get promotion, and my agent is going to meet Harry and discuss my future.

"I have another year left on my contract but, ideally, I would like to stay for one more year after that, so I am willing to take a 50 percent drop in my wages."

Redknapp was delighted with Merson's pledge to commit himself to Portsmouth's Premiership future.

"Paul has had a terrific season and it is great news that he wants to stay for another couple of years," said the Pompey boss.

"We need players like him if we are going to survive in The Premiership."
