Roberto Carlos handed three-game ban

ROBERTO CARLOS has been banned for Brazil's next three games by Fifa for manhandling a referee.

The Real Madrid ace was sent off during the 2-1 defeat to Portugal on March 29 for jostling referee Alon Yefet with his shoulder after the referee had awarded a free kick to the home side.

As he was suspended in early April, pending the Fifa hearing, Roberto Carlos missed Brazil's friendly against Mexico on April 30 and football's world governing body have decided that the Mexico game should count towards his suspension, meaning he will only miss Brazil's next two matches in the Confederations Cup.

"Having viewed the video recording of the match and, having read the referee's report, the chairman of the Fifa appeal committee is of the opinion that there is sufficient evidence to support the provisional suspension, and that the regulations have been applied correctly," read a Fifa statement.

The attacking defender admitted that he made a mistake and that he plans to be back playing for his country as soon as possible.

"I want to come back as fast as possible," said Roberto Carlos.

"I find that I committed an error when going to complain directly with the referee, but I did not have any intention of agreeing with it and I already sent my explanations to the Fifa."

The former Internazionale star revealed he plans to appeal the decision as he does not want to miss any games

"Already I have spoke with Marcos (goalkeeper) on this. We believe to show to lower the punishment," added Roberto Carlos.

"I know that already I fulfilled missing a game against Mexico, but if it will be able, I can come back in the next one."

It was the full back's first sending off for his country and he has three days to oppose the latest ban, which will not affect his domestic duties with Real Madrid.
