Maldini: European tie so different

MILAN'S iconic captain Paolo Maldini has admitted that the Champions League semi-final clash against neighbours Internazionale does not feel like a normal Italian league game.

The two sides have played one leg of the all-Italian semi-final and it is goalless going into the second tie.

"This derby is completely exceptional," said Maldini. "In the first leg I was really emotional.

"The difference is that you are playing a Champions League semi-final.

"There are different emotions, but we will move on from this weekend's loss to Brescia to focus on this game.

"I could not ask for more from my career."

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has selection headaches for the game, with several top players sat on the bench despite the club's poor league form.

"I have no doubts that Ancelotti has some difficult choices to make," added Maldini.

"We have a good squad and that makes any selection difficult.

"I have an inkling that the team that stays the most relaxed will go through to the final."

Juventus wrapped up the title at the weekend, but Maldini believes that it was handed to them on a plate.

"We knew we could not catch them," conceded Maldini. "But this is due to Inter and Milan's failings.

"We both had a really positive first half to the season, but we lost a lot of points in the second half due to the differing form in Champions League and Serie A."
