Crowell joins Dragons

WREXHAM have made their first new signing of the close season by taking Welsh Under-19 international midfielder Matthew Crowell from Premiership side Southampton.

The highly-rated youngster enjoyed an extensive trial with The Dragons beginning in late March, having had a previous trial run-out with Division Two side Bristol City.

The 18-year-old became a Saints trainee after the South Coast club paid a six-figure sum to his old club Swansea City for him, having forked out compensation on three other promising Welsh youngsters as well.

A regular in Southampton's reserves, Crowell seems to have impressed Wrexham boss Denis Smith enough to earn himself a deal at the Racecourse Ground, with the North Wales outfit making their way back to Division Two next season.

"I have enjoyed my time here at Wrexham and was delighted when the manager told me he was going to offer me a contract," Crowell told the club's official website.

"I hope I have shown what I'm capable of during training and with the reserves, but I'd like to be doing even better next season.

"It's great that the club has been promoted back to the Second Division and I'm really looking forward to being involved with the first team squad.

"Naturally, the other advantage of coming here is that I'm also joining a Welsh club and I hope that might boost my international ambitions."
