Strong interest in Terriers job

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN have revealed they have been swamped by interest in their vacant manager's post with several high-profile names wanting the job.

Following the departures of Mick Wadsworth and subsequently Mel Machin towards the end of the campaign, The Terriers are scouring for a fresh face at the helm.

The club's prospective chairman, Terry Fisher, who is part of a consortium to buy The Terriers and lead them out of administration, confirmed the wealth of interest in the manager's role.

Despite Third Division football being on offer at The McAlpine Stadium next term, Fisher revealed there was healthy interest in the job.

"Huddersfield Town is a great club, steeped in history, so it has come as no real surprise that we have had a great deal of interest from a number of well-known managers," said Fisher.

"Obviously, we cannot name any of them but we are extremely encouraged by the response. We are obviously looking for someone who will gain us promotion next season so we will consider every application on its merits."

Fisher also admitted he had enjoyed 'positive' discussions with striker Martin Smith regarding a new contract.

Smith's current deal expires in the summer and he has been offered a fresh two-year contract with Fisher optimistic of a productive outcome to the talks.

He added: "We are having ongoing talks with Martin Smith and a number of other players. I had a positive meeting with Martin but nothing was finalised yesterday (Thursday).

"He's a super lad and a real top-quality player and I would really like him to stay.

"But, whatever happens with Martin, or any other player, we are trying to work within strict financial constraints."
