Makaay clinches golden boot
The Deportivo La Coruna star has notched 27 Liga goals this term with three rounds of the Spanish championship remaining, and Makaay could not hide his satisfaction at having landed the gong.
"It's the maximum (honour) for a striker on an individual level. When I retire they won't be able to take it away from me," said the Dutch international.
"My team-mates have helped me achieve it. I hope I score some more in the final three games."
However, Makaay - who has failed to find the net in his last three outings for Depor - admitted that he would swap his award for a championship medal.
"I would definitely change the Golden Boot for the league. The objectives of the team come before my own."
Makaay has though now set his sights on surpassing the mark of 29 goals set by Depor's Brazilian legend Bebeto in the 1992-93 campaign, and team-mate Albert Luque has backed him to achieve the feat.
"I've encouraged him to try and beat the mark of Bebeto. Roy is capable of beating many records," said Luque.
"There are very few forwards like him and that's why he's so valuable to Depor."
