Maldini praises Maldini

FORMER Italian national coach Cesare Maldini believes his son, Paolo, has a chance of winning this year's Golden Ball and also represents a perfect role model for aspiring footballers.

The Milan captain enjoyed another glittering moment in his illustrious career last week as he lifted the Champions League trophy following the penalty shoot-out triumph over Italian rivals Juventus.

His father, Cesare, who won the same competition 40 years earlier, admits he would be delighted if Maldini capped his year by landing the Golden Ball.

"I'd be really happy but I think to win it the results of the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup will be important," said Maldini senior.

"But I think the numbers are there.

"It has been an incredibly happy sensation (Milan winning the Champions League). I'm happy for Paolo and for what he has been able to do at Milan."

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti agreed with veteran coach Maldini, and also praised his professionalism and believes he is an ideal figurehead for football.

"He's a good example for football. He never shows bad behaviour, a complaint or a reactionary fault," said Maldini.

"Maldini's figure represents football in Italy and all over the world and is a good example of how a professional has to be."
