Owen - We can cope without Beckham

ENGLAND stand-in skipper Michael Owen has revealed his pride at winning his 50th cap in Wednesday's Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia and he believes that the side can cope without captain David Beckham.

The Liverpool star is set to become the youngest ever England international to reach the milestone of 50 caps.

"Only a couple of players in the squad have got that (50 caps), so to be captain as well for the night, should round it off.

"I've captained the side when David's gone off but never started (as captain) in a competitive game - and that will make it even better.

"I think Bobby Moore was one of the youngest at 25 (to reach 50 caps) but with the way things are going these days - Wayne Rooney was 17 and in the squad - someone will probably take the record off me. I am expecting one of these youngsters to come along and take the record off me."

Owen is confident that England will be able to cope without the suspended Beckham for the Slovakia test.

"We will miss him, there's not too many players that captain the side like him or are as a good player as he is," continued Beckham.

"But we can certainly cope without him. There are some bright youngsters coming through and I am sure they will take that chance with both hands. We have enough to win the game."
