Richards pens new Ipswich deal

IPSWICH TOWN have been boosted by the news that starlet Matt Richards has signed a new contract that will tie him to the club until June 2006.

The 18-year-old made his mark on the first team last season and became the youngest player in the club's history to represent them in Europe when he made his debut in Ipswich's away leg of their Uefa Cup match against Avenir Beggen.

Richards's performances at left wing back attracted the attention of Southampton during the course of the last campaign, but the youngster told the Portman Road club's official website he never considered leaving the club.

"It's nice to know that other people have been looking at me and interest is there but there has never been a thought in my mind about leaving Ipswich," said Richards.

"I am delighted to sign a new contract and believe that we have the players here to get back into The Premiership very soon."
