I didn't move for money - Zola
The former Chelsea striker decided against a one-year contract extension with The Blues, preferring to wind down his career with the club he supported as a youngster, thus ending his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
At a press conference unveiling, the former Italian international also admitted that as he is nearing the age of 37, it was right for him to sign just a one-year deal with his hometown club, stating that his playing days are nearing an end and that he did not want to play just for money.
"I decided the length of the contract as respect for the others and also because I'm not 25-years-old," said Zola.
"I don't know for how many years I'll play. I want firstly to see what I can still give on the pitch.
"One thing is sure - I don't play for money. It hasn't been an easy thing to decide (to come home).
"These are situations you have to decide and I wanted to decide in a good way, also for Cagliari, respect that they are taking a gamble on me. And I wanted to be sure to be the right person for them.
"That's why I had to think a lot. I came back to Sardinia because of my big will to have more contact with Italian culture.
"Money doesn't count only in life. This team is already strong and president (Massimo) Cellino will make it possible to improve it.
"I passed from the Champions League to Serie B, but hard choices include also these things.
"I know my support can be useful for Cagliari and I enjoy myself playing against Real Madrid or teams of a different category. The important thing is spirit and I think of having the right one.
"I want to underline the discussion of my reputation - I'm Gianfranco Zola and I think I will be able to give many things to Cagliari and to Italian football but I can't promise anything."
