McLeish mulls over Hibic swap

RANGERS boss Alex McLeish has admitted he is weighing up taking Atletico Madrid defender Mirsad Hibic as part of the deal for Mikel Arteta to move the opposite way.

Atletico are keen on signing Arteta and have offered a player-plus cash deal to sign the skilful midfielder.

Rangers had originally wanted a straight cash deal, but are now considering taking Bosnian ace Hibic as part of the transfer.

McLeish is mulling over the move as he feels he does not know enough about Hibic even though he is in desperate need to bolster his defence.

"I have seen Hibic playing for Bosnia against Denmark in Copenhagen two months ago," said McLeish.

"He did well against Ebbe Sand and Jon Dahl Tomasson but that was just one sighting of him.

"I know Atletico have leaked goals, although I don't know if it was down to him. I need to see more of Hibic."

Meanwhile, McLeish has defended the club over its controversial last-minute decision not to sign Argentinian striker Luciano Figueroa.

The player's father and agent were left fuming after seeing the deal collapse when everything had been agreed to see him arrive at Ibrox, but McLeish insists the club have done nothing wrong.

"Until it is signed, sealed and delivered we have the right to walk off," added McLeish.

"I feel sorry for Figueroa because I met him and said I looked forward to working with him.

"But in the end it just didn't happen. That's life and that's football."
