LA crash out of Peace Cup
Galaxy forward Alex Pineda Chacon scored the club's lone goal of the match and the Peace Cup tournament.
In front of a vocal crowd split between Hong Myung-bo and his former World Cup team-mates, Lee Young-pyo, Park Ji-sung and coach Guus Hiddink supporters, Los Angeles's defence faltered right at the start conceding two goals in the first five minutes of play.
PSV exploited an early Galaxy defensive lapse, as midfielder Park put the Dutch champions 1-0 up in the second minute of play.
PSV's John de Jong carried the ball all the way to the edge of the box before Galaxy defender Alexi Lalas made a sliding tackle to knock the ball loose.
However, Park flew in, corralled the loose ball and fired in a 16-yard shot that beat diving Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.
In the fifth minute, PSV doubled the lead on the strength of a Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink goal.
Arjen Robben started the play by sending the cross to Hesselink from the left flank, catching the PSV forward inside the 18-yard box.
Hesselink collected the ball to his feet, firing a hard shot that deflected off the Galaxy's Lalas and past a helpless Hartman.
"Disappointing, the first ten minutes was where we lost the game," said LA midfielder Simon Elliott.
"We've done some good things over here as a team, but I guess we're five or ten minutes away from being a good side at the moment. Hopefully, we learn from tonight."
The Galaxy got right back into the match in the 15th minute, when Chacon scored his first goal of the tournament.
Ryan Suarez sent the ball into the penalty area to start the play, where Chris Albright's touch found Chacon in the middle of the box.
Chacon sent the ball to keeper Ronald Waterreus' left side, hitting the back of the net to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
"I thought that after we went down two nothing that we accounted for ourselves fairly well and got a goal back," said Galaxy manager Sigi Schmid.
"In the second half, we were trying to push for the equaliser because we knew that we had to win in order to advance.
"So, we opened up a little bit more in the back and they are a team that if you give them opportunities they punish you. Certainly, they punished us in the second half with those two goals."
PSV reaffirmed the advantage in the 55th minute, scoring an insurance goal against the run of play.
Midfielder Mark van Bommel laid the ball down the middle to a onrushing de Jong, who snuck in behind the Galaxy defence to get a one-on-one run with an exposed Hartman.
Hartman came off his line to cut down the shooting angle, but de Jong's shot beat him at the far post, making the score 3-1 in favour of PSV.
In the 79th minute, PSV got the final goal of the match, van Bommel picked out Lee Young-pyo, who beat Hartman to make the score 4-1.
In the end, however, the gap proved to be too wide for the Galaxy to come back before the final whistle.
"It was disappointing, anytime you go down two goals early it is going to be a tough thing to fight back from," said Hartman.
"We got a bit unlucky I felt on all of the goals. I know on the first two there were deflections, the third goal was a break away and the fourth goal was a turnover.
"But, you have to give PSV a lot of credit. They absolutely took the game to us, even when we were down in their end possessing the ball and playing well consistently through out.
"You can see what money buys and they were a great squad tonight. Obviously, they showed it."
Los Angeles fly back to America on Monday to return to MLS action, in real need of points, as they remain in the wrong half of the League standings.
