Freund in Dortmund frame

FORMER German international Steffen Freund could be set to return to Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle refused to hand the defensive midfielder a new contract this summer, forcing Freund to leave White Hart Lane.

Dortmund were hit by a double blow last week when Evanilson and Torsten Frings both tore cruciate ligaments and coach Matthias Sammer is expected to turn to the transfer market in order to find adequate replacements for his injured stars.

"There are several candidates and Steffen Freund is one of them," declared director of sport Michael Zorc.

Freund joined Dortmund in 1993 and left the German giants after winning two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 1998.
