Jeffers' wage warning

BIRMINGHAM CITY have warned Francis Jeffers that he must reduce his demands if he wants to resurrect his career at St Andrews.

Blues boss Steve Bruce had been tracking the Arsenal striker for much of the summer, but his interest appeared to end when he brought in Luciano Figueroa.

It would seem, though, that Blues are looking for a partner for Figueroa, and Jeffers` name is still high on their wish list.

Birmingham chairman David Gold is looking for the former Everton hit-man to show that he wants to play regular first-team football by reducing his salary demands.

Gold said: "It won't happen unless Jeffers takes a cut in his wages.

"If he wants to sit at Arsenal on his big contract and play golf every day, rather than get on with his career, then he can continue with that.

"Jeffers has got at most 10 years left - and losing something like 150 grand a year is not something I would see as a good career move to be honest.

"But if the alternative is sitting on your backside doing nothing, where is the motivation in that?''
