Spurs set to sign South African

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR are close to bolstering their defence with the capture of Mbulelo Mabizela.

The defender made a lasting impression on Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle during a recent friendly between the North London outfit and Orlando Pirates on the Premiership side's tour of South Africa.

Spurs came to a swift agreement with Orlando Pirates and Mabizela joined the Tottenham squad on their flight back to England.

Mabizela is expected to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical upon his arrival in England, with Spurs confident of agreeing a deal with the 22-year-old.

The defender is an established South African international and a work permit application should be a formality.

Tottenham have been active in the transfer market already, with Helder Postiga the most high-profile arrival, but a defender has been a priority for Hoddle for much of the summer.

Spurs looked brittle at the back on occasions last term, and a solid defender would be a boost to the Tottenham squad.
