Beckham shines on debut

DAVID BECKHAM shone in his first appearance for Real Madrid as the Spanish champions ran out 4-0 winners in their friendly against Red Dragons.

The 28-year-old England captain, making his first showing since breaking a bone in his hand while on international duty against South Africa in May, took to the side like a duck to water.

Real coach Carlos Queiroz fielded a strong line-up against the Chinese side with Raul and Ronaldo up front, whilst Claude Makelele, Zinedine Zidane and Figo played alongside Beckham in the midfield.

The former Manchester United man took his first free-kick 20 minutes in, after Roberto Carlos was fouled, however the winger's effort was well-saved.

Beckham had a second direct strike on goal from a dead-ball situation moments later, but this time he fired just wide with a swerving effort.

Figo fired the Santiago Bernabeu side ahead just before the break, after being freed by Ronaldo, clipping the ball past the on-rushing keeper.

In the second half the club's new coach rang the changes with Santiago Solari and Fernando Morientes replacing Zidane and Ronaldo.

Beckham's debut lasted 70 minutes and he did little wrong during his time on the pitch, linking up well with Michel Salgado down the right side.

Substitute Morientes doubled Real's advantage on 70 minutes, when he was well-placed to capitalise on Roberto Carlos's spilled long-range effort to shoot home from five yards out.

The forgotten striker cemented his claim for a starting role this season when he netted his second of the game late on to give the score a more respectable look.

With the hosts' defence on their last legs their was still time for Javier Portillo to beat the offside trap and slide home Real's third goal in the last ten minutes of the contest.
