Kirkland gets England call
The Liverpool goalkeeper is included by Sven Goran Eriksson despite having not played a competitive game since last January after sustaining a serious knee injury in an FA Cup game at Crystal Palace.
The Swede has named a 24-man squad for the game at Portman Road with Ian Walker dropping out for Kirkland.
Newcastle's Jonathan Woodgate returns to the fold having missed last summer's games.
Wayne Rooney is left out despite playing in Everton's defeat at Arsenal with the youngster still not fully recovered from his ankle injury he picked up in pre-season.
Aston Villa's Darius Vassell also misses out through injury leaving Eriksson with just Liverpool duo Michael Owen and Emile Heskey and Southampton's James Beattie as his strikers.
Birmingham's Matthew Upson, Middlesbrough's Gareth Southgate and Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas have been omitted from the squad, but Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell return after injury ruled them out of the last game against Slovakia in June.
