Harry plays down Smertin link
PORTSMOUTH manager Harry Redknapp has played down speculation that he is looking to sign Russian midfielder Alexei Smertin in a possible loan deal, should he complete his proposed move to Chelsea.
The Blues look set to tie up a £5 million deal for the Bordeaux star, after the player backed out of a move to Torpedo Moscow at the last minute.
However, reports in France said the 28-year-old would be loaned out before he even takes the field for Chelsea.
Redknapp has now admitted to planetfootball.com that he likes the player, but denied that he has now made any such move for him.
"I know about him, he is a great player but we haven't made a move for him," said Redknapp.
"Chelsea have not even signed him yet and I doubt they will let him go, unless it is Christmas already.
"We are looking to bolster our squad and are looking at what possible loan deals or free transfers are out there."
Bordeaux have already moved to sign a replacement for Smertin in the shape of Real Madrid's Albert Celades and are expecting his departure imminently.
The Stamford Bridge outfit are also believed to be in the hunt for Mexican midfielder Gerardo Torrado and it is the possible signing of him that could see Smertin move out on loan.
Tottenham were also linked with the player, but Chelsea should seal a deal in the next few days..
