Charlton 2 Everton 2

ENGLAND tyro Wayne Rooney came to Everton's rescue at The Valley as the visitors twice battled back to earn a draw against Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks twice had their noses in front through Jason Euell penalties but Rooney's thumping effort on 72 minutes ensured the spoils were shared.

Charlton were awarded their first spot kick on 25 minutes when Scott Parker's charge into the box was halted by David Unsworth, with Euell on hand to send Richard Wright the wrong way.

But a minute later, The Toffees were level after Welsh international Mark Pembridge conjured up a clever pass for the onrushing Steve Watson to guide into the back of the net.

The Toffees' defence was again slack on 49 minutes when Hermann Hreidarsson drew a reckless challenge from Joseph Yobo in the area with Euell cool as a cucumber for the second time to score from the spot.

Teenage sensation Rooney had endured a rather subdued display at The Valley until he sprung to life with less than 20 minutes remaining.

A ball into the box did not initially signal danger to the Charlton defence but Rooney's first-time control enabled him to turn sharply and thunder an equaliser into the roof of the net.
