Blades land Gerrard

SHEFFIELD UNITED have solved their goalkeeping crisis by signing Everton shot-stopper Paul Gerrard on loan.

Gerrard has arrived at Bramall Lane on a three-month deal after failing to force his way into the first-team picture at Everton.

Richard Wright is firmly established as David Moyes's first choice while Steve Simonsen has been providing the cover this term.

Moyes was happy to allow Gerrard to leave the club on a temporary basis and the switch ends The Blades' quest for a new keeper.

An injury to Paddy Kenny left Blades boss Neil Warnock without an experienced shot-stopper until the New Year and he will hand Gerrard his debut in Saturday's clash against Coventry.

The 30-year-old was in buoyant mood after clinching his move to the First Division side and is looking forward to playing regularly.

"I'm delighted to come to Bramall Lane," he told the club's official website. "This is a great chance for me to play first-team football again.

"I've played here a couple of times in the past. I was impressed with United last season and I'm glad to see they have made a good start to this campaign."

Warnock believes the capture of Gerrard enables him to guide Kenny steadily through his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

"We've agreed everything with Everton and Paul," said Warnock. "We are both delighted he is going to be joining us for three months.

"This move obviously gives us a chance to properly assess Paddy Kenny's injury and we won't have to rush him back."
