Vassell out of England reckoning

ASTON VILLA'S win over Leicester has been marred slightly by an injury to Darius Vassell which has ruled the striker out of England's upcoming Euro 2004 qualifiers.

Vassell aggravated an old pelvic problem against The Foxes and Villa boss David O'Leary has confirmed the centre forward will not be risked for the games with FYR Macedonia and Liechtenstein.

The former Leeds boss said: "Darius won't be fit to go with England. He has a pelvic problem that needs sorting out.

"We're going to get him looked at now. The season is too long for him to keep going the way he is.

"We're going to try and get to the bottom of the problem and, from what I gather, it's a problem he's had for a few years here."

O'Leary was delighted with his side's victory, saying it was just reward for some good performances earlier in the month.

He said: "Over the last couple of games, we've been playing this type of football and this time we got off to a very good start.

"We've played Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday and I'm delighted with the players. We had deserved more out of the previous two games."
