Leo waits on deal

NORWEGIAN midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen admits he has been given special dispensation to sign for a new club after the transfer window has shut.

Leonhardsen has been without a club since being released by Aston Villa in the summer and has received minimal interest from prospective employers.

He is currently injured and that has prevented him from finding a new club before the transfer deadline.

But Leonhardsen is not concerned about missing out on a deal before the deadline as he has been informed by Uefa that he can sign on after the window is closed.

"I have checked out the case (Uefa's rules) and found out that since I'm injured there will be dispensation from the rule after September 1," Leonhardsen told VG.

The 33-year-old is keen to secure a new side as he wants to ensure he will be in the Norway squad if they qualify for Euro 2004.

The former Wimbledon and Liverpool man is expected to retire after those finals and needs to find a team to boost his prospects of a swansong in Portugal.
