Inzaghi earns Italy recall

MILAN striker Filippo Inzaghi has been recalled to the Italy squad for their Euro 2004 qualifying double-header, but Francesco Totti misses out through injury.

Inzaghi was overlooked by Azzurri coach Giovanni Trapattoni for the recent friendly against Germany as he wanted to assess other attacking options.

But Trapattoni has welcomed Inzaghi back into the fold for the crunch clashes against Wales and Serbia & Montenegro in September which could decide Italy's Euro 2004 fate.

Inzaghi's Milan team-mate Gennaro Gattuso is also back in the squad after missing the Germany encounter through injury while his replacement for that match - Alessio Tacchinardi - keeps his spot.

The major blow for Trapattoni - and big boost for Wales - is the absence of Roma playmaker Totti, who is struggling with a hip injury.

Totti was hurt during a pre-season friendly against Real Betis and Trapattoni has decided not to gamble on his key man's fitness.

Italy tackle Wales on September 6 and face Serbia & Montenegro four days later.
