Morientes explains Monaco decision

FERNANDO MORIENTES has explained his decision to join Monaco on loan for the rest of the season.

The Spanish star left Real Madrid on Saturday as he penned a 12-month deal with the French side.

The Principality outfit had been looking for a new striker for most of the summer, but after failing to land John Carew and Henrik Larsson, they finally got their man in the shape of Morientes.

"I love the Principality and this club. Monaco is a serious club," said Morientes.

"It was a very interesting opportunity for me, I had other offers but I wanted to come here.

"I felt the coach and the chairman really wanted me and that is essential.

"It really is a good team, which shows great solidarity.

"At Real, my situation was complex. I was looking for a change of air and I had the desire to come to Monaco.

"At the end of the season, there will be Euro 2004 and I want to be part of it."
