Shearer agrees new deal

NEWCASTLE UNITED captain Alan Shearer has agreed a one-year contract extension to keep him at St James' Park until 2005.

Shearer's present deal had been due to expire at the end of this season and there had been fanciful speculation the former England international would leave the club.

But The Magpies have quashed any notion their talismanic striker will depart Tyneside by handing the 33-year-old a 12-month extension.

The prolific marksman was determined to secure a contract for a further season under Sir Bobby Robson's stewardship and his wish has been granted.

"This is what Alan Shearer wanted and it is also what Newcastle United wanted," said chairman Freddy Shepherd.

Shearer's decision to pen the contract is a welcome boost for The Magpies after their turbulent start to the new season.

The ex-England skipper contributed to Newcastle's failure to reach the Champions League after he fluffed a penalty in the shoot-out against Partizan Belgrade.

Newcastle are also still to register a Premiership victory and will be anxious for Shearer's continued commitment to the cause to provide a timely fillip.

The experienced hit-man joined Newcastle in 1996 in a bank-busting £15 million move from Blackburn Rovers and he is closing in on his 150th goal for the club.
