Real celebrate Di Stefano in style

REAL MADRID beat River Plate 3-1 in a friendly that marked the 50th anniversary of Alfredo Di Stefano's debut for the Spanish side.

Goals from Santiago Solari and a brace by Javier Portillo were enough for Real to see off their opponents who netted a late consolation through Luis Gonzalez.

The game was in honour of Di Stefano starting his career at the Santiago Bernabeu and the legendary player witnessed an open encounter with many star names involved.

The Argentinian side were selected for the game as the former European Footballer of the Year started his career at River before moving on to have a distinguished spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I am very proud of having the chance of playing a match here and against such important players," stated River Plate's Fernando Cavenaghi.

Cavenaghi's performance helped increase his reputation as a star for the future and the young forward was just one of several River players who impressed Real Madrid on the night.

"Di Stefano and several board members of Real Madrid asked me about some of our players, especially midfielder Daniel Luduena, keeper Franco Costanzo and Cavenaghi," said vice president Julio Macchi.

"They knew of Cavenaghi because they have been following his performances but they were also impressed with our goalkeeper and Luduena who had a very good performance."
