Villarreal suffer Calleja shock

Villarreal midfielder Javier Calleja has been ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury during a training session on Wednesday morning, and will go under the surgeon's knife to repair the damage on Wednesday afternoon.

Calleja becomes the third Villarreal player this term to require knee surgery, after Marcos Senna and Josico, and increases the club's growing injury problems.

'The Yellow Submarines now only have 15 fit professional players, of which two are goalkeepers, and look likely to ask for dispensation to bring in reinforcements to their ravaged squad.

Calleja admitted that the injury had come at the worst possible time for both him and the club.

"They say that these injuries always come at a bad time, but mine has come at the worst possible," he told the Efe news agency.

"We have very few players in the squad at the moment, and a long-term absence complicates the situation even further.

"I knew straight away what had happened, and when I got back to the dressing room I was very low.

"Only the support of my team-mates who were at my side helped me recover a little."

The loss of Calleja will come as a major blow to Villarreal boss Benito Floro (pictured) who has seen his side make an encouraging start to the new campaign, the Castellon-based outfit currently sit fifth in La Primera having taken nine points from their opening five games.
