Bellmay blow for Toon

Newcastle have been dealt a crushing blow with the news that Craig Bellamy has suffered a recurrence of his knee injury.

Bellamy has not travelled with Newcastle's squad for their trip to NAC Breda in the Uefa Cup on Wednesday, after aggravating his long-standing knee injury playing for Wales against Serbia & Montenegro at the weekend.

Magpies chief Sir Bobby Robson confirmed the news, saying: "Craig Bellamy is not travelling because he has an injury and we have left him at home.

"We have to look at the situation very closely.

"He has been sent for a scan and it's the same knee he injured earlier in the season. We will compare the knee to how it was when he complained about it last time.

"He complained bitterly about it in August but he recovered from it and said he had never felt better.

"We've decided to get a scan and we will then be able to make an assessment. "It is too early to say how many games he will miss."

Newcastle may be able to offset the loss of Bellamy in Holland, as they carry a 5-0 cushion into the game, but his absence will be felt domestically.

The Magpies face Middlesbrough in the Tees-Tyne derby on Saturday, and an extended spell on the sidelines for Bellamy will heap more pressure on the shoulders of skipper Alan Shearer.
