New deal joy for Turner

Everton boss David Moyes has backed the club's decision to hand rookie keeper Iain Turner a new contract.

Turner has made a lasting impression on Moyes since his move from Stirling Albion, with the Toffees tactician feeling the new deal is thoroughly deserved.

"He came from Stirling Albion and he wasn't on the best contract," said Moyes. "I felt that it was right that we rewarded him for the progress that he's made in the short time he's been here.

"Iain was already contracted to us, but I think we did it partly to show him that we reward people who are doing well. And we think that Iain Turner has been doing well."

The 19-year-old was delighted to have penned a deal which ties him to the Goodison Park club until 2005.

"I was delighted when I found out that I was going to be given a new contract," Turner told the club's website

"I've just been trying to work hard since I came down here. I've just been trying to train well, build up and when the gaffer told me the news that he was going to offer me an extension, it was great.

"When I first came here, I was playing Under-19 football. I was enjoying it then and I'm still enjoying it now.

"At the moment it looks like I'm only on the bench through injury, but if I get a chance, I'll be taking it."
