Chelsea failed in Kaka bid

By Adam Marshall
Chelsea made an audacious late bid to prise Brazilian talent Kaka from Milan's grasp, the San Siro club have revealed.

Rossoneri vice-president Adriano Galliani has been speaking about the former Sao Paulo winger following the South American's impressive start to life in Serie A.

Kaka scored during the convincing 3-1 win over local rivals Internazionale on Sunday evening, and has quickly become a favourite with the Milan supporters.

"Kaka was supposed to arrive in 2004, in our plans, but we were forced to sign him as Chelsea had advanced their offer," Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport. "A substantial offer, as is common with (Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich.

"I have to thank the Sao Paulo president Marcelo Portugal, who stuck to his word and was not influenced by the money, and also Kaka, who earns less than he would have earned in London.

"Kaka will become one of the best players in the world."

The 21-year-old had already served notice of his potential with some dazzling performances in his homeland, but his ability to adapt swiftly to one of the toughest leagues in Europe has seen his stock rising considerably in recent weeks.
