Elber ridicules Bayern's chances

By Chris Ives
Former Bayern Munich striker Giovane Elber has ridiculed the German side's hopes that they have a chance of winning the Champions League this season.

The prolific Brazilian was dropped by Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld after the signing of Roy Makaay in the summer and promptly moved to French champions Lyon.

The two clubs will now meet twice in the Champions League group phase and Elber has stoked the fires going into the first game next Tuesday with his criticism of his former club.

"I don't even think that Bayern will reach the quarter-finals," Elber told tz.

"I've been following their matches carefully and I think they're going to struggle in the Champions League.

"It's a new team that needs time. The squad must grow together over the next two or three years before they really know each others' game.

"The pressure is enormous after last season's failure and the whole squad is feeling it."

Elber, who felt he was unfairly treated at the Olympic Stadium after Makaay's arrival, will be desperate to prove the Bayern management team wrong with goals against the Germans.

"The three points will remain here," he crowed ahead of next week's showdown in France,

"There's no way Bayern will win the Champions League."
