Clarke set to retire

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Matt Clarke looks likely to be forced to retire from the professional game through injury.

The former Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday custodian has been troubled by a long-standing knee problem, and, despite returning for the opening four games of the season, has failed to fully overcome the injury.

Palace boss Steve Kember revealed that Clarke would be seeking further specialist opinion before deciding his future, but admitted it was looking bleak for the 29-year-old.

"He's going to see a specialist this week but it's looking increasingly likely that he will have to retire, which is a blow," stated the Eagles' boss.

Kember has been dealt a further blow with the news that defender Darren Powell tore a thigh muscle during Tuesday's night 4-3 home defeat to Ipswich.

The former Brentford stopper now looks set to be on the sidelines from around six weeks.

"He's torn his thigh muscle and will be out for a while. At this stage we're not sure how long," stated Kember.
