Ameobi rubbishes Nigeria link

EXCLUSIVE
Shola Ameobi has rubbished reports suggesting he was thinking of switching his allegiance from England to Nigeria.

The Newcastle United star has come to prominence this season and has taken his first team opportunity with both hands, forging a great understanding with captain Alan Shearer.

Reports had suggested that Nigeria wanted to entice him to their camp in time for him to play in the African Cup of Nations in January.

However, Ameobi has now told skysports.com that no such thought has crossed his mind, and he is as committed to England as he ever has been.

"Three years ago when I first broke through, there was approaches from both the Nigerian and English associations," he told skysports.com.

"I spoke to my parents and to the gaffer and we chose England for all the right reasons and I have enjoyed all my international experience.

"I am a player who is looking to play at the highest level like anyone, but I am just training hard and looking to play well for my club and if that happens perhaps I might get looked at by Sven.

"So reports suggesting I was unhappy at not being called up are complete rubbish.

"I have really enjoyed my time with the England Under-21s and that makes me want to break into the full squad.

"I have not had any contact with Nigeria for three years and do not intend to."

England assistant coach Tord Grip confirmed this week that Ameobi was being considered along with the likes of Alan Smith and Jermain Defoe - which is an indication of his progress this term.
